About me

My story

I am a photographer, artist, husband and father, living and working in South Gloucestershire. Initially studying art and education at University in Bristol, I enjoyed nearly 30 years as a teacher, then headteacher, while continuing my passion for art and photography. Leaving my role as headteacher, in 2019, to start a new adventure, I set up my own business as Jon Bird - photographer.

Over that past 18 years, I have photographed weddings in a wide range of locations, with each couple having their own unique character, which shines through in their special day. My portfolio highlights my candid style of wedding photography, focused on the full range of human emotions and the little details that make each day special.

I also love nothing more than walking outdoors in the natural world, especially in dramatic landscapes and changing weather conditions. My landscape photography aims to capture a moment in time, with the energy and atmosphere of each location.

There is also so much beauty that we walk past every day, without appreciating. In my macro photography, I look for the beauty of colour, texture and intricate pattern or design, both in the natural and made environment.

The last aspect of my photography has focused on pet or animal photography. On my long walks through South Gloucestershire, Cornwall, Devon and South Wales I was always joined by my beautiful border-collie, Stella, until she passed away in 2021. This has led me to also enjoy photographing the energy, beauty and character of pets and animals, at rest and play.

For many years, I have had many photoshoots, for individuals or groups of family or friends, often marking key moments of their lives together.

With links with so many creative people, through my other role as independent yarn-dyer, I also help to capture the beauty of amazing designs and makes in fashion photoshoots. Or in events photography, I capture the vibe of an event, both large or small, formal or informal.
